Alternatives
Intercom alternatives
People leave Intercom for three fairly distinct reasons, and they lead to three different products. This page splits them before it recommends anything, because the worst outcome here is somebody switching to a tool that fails them the same way in four months.
What this page is based on
Intercom has roughly 2,900 reviews on G2, which is enough to talk about recurring themes rather than anecdotes. Where this page describes what reviewers say, it is describing that corpus and attributing it, not asserting how Intercom conducts itself.
Prices checked: 26 August 2026. Intercom sets its own prices and can change them without telling us.
The arithmetic, before anything else
One person, billed monthly because you are not committing to a year, with Fin handling two hundred conversations. That is $39 for the seat, billed monthly plus $198 for 200 Fin resolutions at Fin's floor rate, which is $237 for the month.
Formala Growth is $39 a month, billed monthly and includes 400 conversations.
Two things fall out of that. Intercom charges more for the AI answering than for the seat it sits on, and the flat plan gives twice the volume for less than the seat alone. Neither is a discount argument: it is a difference in what is being metered. Intercom meters the thing you control least, which is how often your customers need help.
It is also the smallest version of the comparison. Fin's rate is a floor, the seat count is one, and none of the add-ons are switched on.
If you never needed a helpdesk
This is the branch most small businesses are actually in. Intercom is built for a team working a queue against targets, and if nobody at your company has a support queue, you have been paying for the apparatus and using the widget.
Formala is the widget without the apparatus: it answers your website, books the appointment into your own calendar, and writes up who was asking.
| Plan | Price | Included |
|---|---|---|
| Starter | $19 /mo | 150 conversations |
| Growth | $39 /mo | 400 conversations |
| Pro | $79 /mo | 1,000 conversations |
| Business | $149 /mo | 2,500 conversations |
One price, and every core feature on it
Starter at $19 /mo for 150 conversations, Growth at $39 /mo for 400 conversations, Pro at $79 /mo for 1,000 conversations, Business at $149 /mo for 2,500 conversations. 2 months free paid annually. Nothing multiplies by the number of people who log in, nothing meters the answers, and there are no credits to convert before you can work out what a month costs.
A real shared inbox
Several people on the same leads from Growth upward, several live chats at once, and presence so you can see who is on the site right now. Step into any conversation and the assistant goes quiet until you hand it back. Search it, filter by priority, export it.
Messages that survive somebody leaving
A visitor can write to a named person rather than into a void, get the reply by email, and pick the thread back up later. No account, no password, no portal to log into.
A help center that answers for you
A help center you write feeds the assistant's answers, so replies come from your own documentation rather than a short FAQ list, and visitors can browse and read those articles themselves in the widget.
Booking into the calendar you already keep
Google Calendar or Outlook directly. Real free times offered inside the chat, and the appointment written back into your own diary. No third scheduling account to open and keep in sync.
Photos the assistant reads, documents you receive
A visitor can send photos and PDFs, up to ten megabytes each, with nothing to build first. The assistant reads the photos and answers about what it can see. A PDF reaches you on the lead, but the assistant does not open it, so it will tell the visitor a file arrived rather than pretend to have read it.
Voice, on any plan
A microphone in the chat, bought as an add-on on top of whichever plan you are on. The visitor talks, hears the answer read back, and can go back to typing. There is one voice, the same for every business using Formala; it is not a choice.
The badge comes off on the cheapest paid plan
Removing "Powered by Formala" is included from $19 a month, billed monthly upward. It is what a free account pays with rather than an add-on to resell.

What Formala does not do
- No ticket status or lifecycle. A conversation is a conversation, not an object that moves through states.
- No SLAs, and nothing measuring a response against one.
- No saved replies or macros.
- No assignment or routing rules. Everyone on the account sees the same inbox.
- No agent performance reporting.
Those matter when several people answer against targets and somebody reports on it. If that is your week, the referrals below are better answers than we are, and the rest of this page will not change that.
If you need the queue and only want it cheaper
You have support staff, tickets, and somebody who reports on how fast they are answered. Do not buy a website widget. These are the products built for the job you are actually doing, and any of them will serve you better than we will.

If you run a Shopify store
The order and the cart are most of the context in a store conversation, and a tool that cannot see them is guessing. Gorgias is built around that and we are not.

A dot marks a row where Formala is ahead. Rows where Intercom is ahead carry no marker either way.

There is a fuller side-by-side on Formala vs Intercom, written for somebody still choosing rather than already leaving.
What reviewers say
Across that corpus two themes recur. The first is cost: reviewers describe pricing that is hard to forecast and invoices larger than expected. The second, and the largest single theme at roughly 117 reviews, is Fin answering confidently with something wrong and continuing without registering that the customer is unhappy. The workflow builder also draws consistent criticism for rigidity, with no webhook triggers and no parallel branches. These are reviewer accounts, not our characterisation of how Intercom operates.
Sources: G2, about 2,900 reviews.
What we could not confirm
- Exactly which Fin interactions are billed as outcomes, and whether any minimum applies. We could not confirm either, so this page does not describe the billing mechanics beyond the published per-outcome rate.
Questions
That depends what you need. If you need a ticket queue, Help Scout and Freshdesk start well below Intercom and do the job Intercom does. If you do not need a queue, the comparison changes shape entirely: Formala starts at $19 a month, billed monthly for the whole account with AI answering included, against $39 per seat a month, billed monthly plus $0.99 per resolution, from, charged on top of every seat.
